Culturally speaking, there are many things to keep in mind while trekking through these regions. Though you may encounter or see practices contrary to what is listed below, please be aware of and observe the following so as to be respectful of the native people and traditions.
The cultures in Garhwal and Kumaon, India as well as in Nepal are quite similar. The predominant religions of these areas are Hindu, Buddhist and Muslim.
- Women should avoid wearing revealing clothing; i.e. keep your legs and chest covered (no low-cut or spaghetti-strap shirts) while in public places.
- Men and women should always wear a bathing suit or wrap when bathing, even if you believe no one can see you!
- Members of the opposite sex should not engage in public displays of affection, it is considered very inappropriate.
- When entering a temple or participating in a religious event: remove shoes and any leather items; women should cover their heads and arms, when making or accepting an offering (Prasad), do so with your right hand; do not point your feet at a Deity, Guru (teacher) or someone respected by you.
- Lastly, if you must point at something try to use your middle finger. This is a lot to be mindful of, however the people will notice and appreciate your attempts to be respectful.
To learn more about how to be respectful of the cultures you will encounter, we recommend purchasing a travel book: Let's Go, Lonely Planet and Rough Guide are good.
