India Trek: Nanda Devi Base Camp (Kumaon)

The Kumaon Himalayas offer some of the most breathtaking views of Mt. Nanda Devi. The abode of the Goddess is highly revered and is also the second highest peak in the Indian Himalayas (7,820m/25,728ft). It is considered by many to be one of the most beautiful peaks in the world.

Day 1:
Arrive in New Delhi late evening (you will be met by someone from our staff) and drive (7-8 hours) overnight to Mussoorie, a lovely hill station, which gives you your first views of the snow covered peaks. Upon arrival, check in at guesthouse, rest and have a late breakfast or early lunch. The day is yours to unwind and acclimate to your new surroundings.
Yoga class will be held in the afternoon before dinner.

Day 2: Mussoorie (1,921m/6,320ft)
Morning yoga at 6:30 before breakfast
Spend the day relaxing and/or exploring around town.

Day 3: Kausani (1,890m/6,218ft)
Morning yoga at 6:30 before breakfast
We will make an early start for a 10 hour long driving day (310km), winding through the foothills of Garhwal to the Kumaon Himalayas. Kausani is a picturesque hill station, offering excellent views of Mt. Trishul (7,120m/23,425 ft) and Nanda Devi (7,820m/25,728 ft). Watching the sunrise over the Himalayas from here is both enchanting and memorable!

Day 4: Munsiyari (2,290m/7,534ft)
Morning yoga at 6:30 before breakfast
Today we drive 144km (8 hrs) from the heart of Garhwal almost to the western border of Nepal. We will follow the Alaknanda River to Karanprayag and then travel along the Pindari River before breaking away to finish the second half of the drive.

Day 5: Munsiyari
Morning yoga at 6:30 before breakfast
This will be a much-needed and well-deserved rest day to ensure that everyone is prepared for the trek ahead. Munsiyari is situated just above the Gori Ganga River in between the Milam and RalamValley. It is a wonderful vantage point with good camp sites.

Day 6: Lilam (1,850m/6,087ft)
Morning yoga at 6:30 before breakfast
The trek of 16km (4 hrs) is a steady descent all the way to Lilam, which makes the first day one of the easiest. Lilam is the winter home for the inhabitants of Milam Village and is notorious for flies all year round.

Day 7: Bogdiyar (2,500m/8,225ft)
Morning yoga at 6:30 before breakfast
We will trek 15km (5-6 hrs), gradually ascending through thick forests and scenic meadows, before making a steep ascent to Lilam ridge, (2,850m) and then descend to reach camp.

Day 8: Rilkot (3,130m/10,298ft)
Morning yoga at 6:30 before breakfast
Rilkot Village is 12km (5 hrs) from Bogdiyar and located at the heart of this trans-Himalyan region. Sitting just above the river, it makes for a wonderful campsite. We will camp by the river and enjoy the rushing sounds of its waters.

Day 9: Ghangar (3,319m/10,920ft)
Morning yoga at 6:30 before breakfast
A 13km (5 hrs) trek in the shadow of the magnificent Martoli Peak takes us to the ancient village of Ghangar, which is dotted with typical Jauhar houses and an ancient temple all with intricate wood carvings.

Day 10: Pachhu Glacier (3,880m/12,765ft)
Morning yoga at 6:30 before breakfast
A strenuous 7km trek (5 hrs) through lush green vegetation, mostly pink and white rhododendron flowers with Mt. Nanda Devi looming in the distance, makes this trek an exhilarating experience. We will camp in an alpine meadow at the head of the Pachhu Glacier which lies on the North Face of Mt. Nanda Devi.

Day 11: Nanda Devi Base Camp (4,300m/14,147ft)
Morning yoga at 6:30 before breakfast
We will spend the day exploring the base camp and return to our campsite.

Day 12: Martoli (3,430m/11,285ft)
Morning yoga at 6:30 before breakfast
Today we trek 17km (6 hrs) to Martoli. It is located on a high alpine plateau with rolling grass
fields. Once a thriving village on the Indo-Tibet trade route, it has since been deserted.
However, houses full of intricate wood carvings remain. There is a temple here dedicated to
The Goddess Nanda Devi, and from here the views of Mt. Nanda Devi East (7,816m/25,644ft)
and Mt. Nanda Kot (6,860m/22,570ft) offer inspiration.

Day 13: Lilam
Morning yoga at 6:30 before breakfast
Today we trek 29km descending from the high alpine meadows and through thick forests to reach Lilam.

Day 14: Munsiyari
Morning yoga at 6:30 before breakfast
Trek 16km (4 hrs) back to Munsiyari and drive 70km to Chaukori , where we will have our first real bath in days!

Day 15: Srinagar (579m/1,905ft)
Morning yoga at 6:30 before breakfast
We will leave right after breakfast for the long drive (256km) back to Srinagar.

Day 16: Mussoorie
Morning yoga at 6:30 before breakfast
Pack up and depart by 10:00 for the drive back to Mussoorie (160km).

Day 17: Mussoorie
Morning yoga at 6:30 before breakfast
This is a rest day, which leaves plenty of time to walk around town and purchase any last minute gifts for friends and family back home.

Day 18: Mussoorie
Morning yoga at 6:30 before breakfast
Spend the day relaxing and getting things together for your return. This evening we will spend celebrating the end of our journey.

Day 19: New Delhi
Morning yoga at 6:30 before breakfast
We will say our goodbyes and depart for Delhi. Most flights leave between midnight and 2:00AM, so you can rest for a while at the Radisson Hotel and wash up before going to the airport or spend the night, depending upon your travel plans.


Cost per person: US $4,375 based on a 4-person group, US $3,875 based on a 6-person group.

Price Includes: daily yoga instruction, roundtrip ground transportation from Delhi, accommodations and meals while not in Delhi; and equipment such as: two-person tents, dining tent, foam mats, stools and all cooking and kitchen gear; all trekking expenses, support crew and sightseeing within the tour program; professional guides and escorts throughout the trip; all admissions and special service charges as per itinerary.

Price Excludes: international flight and airport taxes; visa and passport fees; medical and trip cancellation insurance; accommodation while in Delhi; any personal expenses such as: laundry, phone calls, alcoholic beverages, gratuity for our crew and any personal medical expenses; personal camping gear such as: sleeping bags, sleeping pads etc. are not included.
